IoT Is Changing Design. Here’s What You Should Do About It




The Internet is changing product development in ways many of us never dreamed of just a few years ago. “Products have become complex systems that combine hardware, sensors, data storage, microprocessors, software, and connectivity in myriad ways,” writes Michael E. Porter, Bishop Lawrence University Professor at Harvard University in a recent Harvard Business Review article.

He cites example after example of companies taking advantage of what’s become known as Internet of Things (IoT):

  • A meter that uses a sensor embedded under a patient’s skin to monitor glucose levels.
  • Wind turbines that adjust their blades in response to other turbines, optimizing efficiency across the wind farm.
  • A tennis racket that tracks and analyzes ball speed and the player’s game.
  • A light bulb that dims slowly at night and blinks red when it detects an intruder.

Smart, connected products now can monitor themselves and their environment, control their response to changes, optimize their own output and efficiency, and ultimately operate autonomously (think robot vacuum cleaners).

And while consumers and industry benefit from this newest wave of technology, behind the scenes many developers are having to rethink their approach to design. “Smart, connected products require a whole set of new design principles, such as designs that achieve hardware standardization through software-based customization, designs that enable personalization, designs that incorporate the ability to support ongoing product upgrades, and designs that enable predictive, enhanced, or remote service,” writes Porter.
