Use the Solution

Onboard your end-users and evaluate how the project went.

Before you begin, complete these steps:

01. Start using DPM

Beginning with this first production line, your operators and line workers should incorporate DPM into their day-to-day jobs. The key to success is appropriate training and open communication. Ensure each employee on this line has completed the minimum training identified in your training strategy. Also, revisit the feedback mechanism plan to ensure your end users have a clear way of communicating issues they encounter or want to provide feedback. This feedback is essential for moving forward with additional lines and plants. A great way to onboard new users is via demonstrations and communicating details of what was implemented and why.

Ensure that Line Operators and Supervisors possess a clear and comprehensive understanding of the essential procedures for utilizing the Production Dashboard. This includes the capability to effectively review and input production counts, scrap counts, and job orders (initiating and concluding), as well as record downtime or lost time attributed to various reasons. Strive to streamline these data entry tasks through automation, integrations, and asset connectivity, alleviating Operators and Supervisors from the burden of manual data entry. Refer to the Production Dashboard sub-topics for detailed instructions on event/data management.

02. Document Lessons Learned

As the project team gathers feedback from that first line, consider how the same processes may work for other lines or plants. Gather feedback from the project team, employees who helped create the procedures, employees using those procedures, and anyone else involved with DPM.

Explore questions like:

  • Did you achieve the outcome you identified for your use case?
  • What went well throughout the project?
  • What was challenging?
  • What did you learn?
  • How could you have done things differently?
  • What are the benefits of using DPM compared to using previous methods?
  • How can you improve for the next project?
  • Were there any skillsets missing from the project team?
  • Was the timeline appropriate?
  • Did you have enough user licenses?

The project retrospective helps identify opportunities to improve processes, reallocate resources, and change your approach. It also enables you to communicate positive outcomes as you encourage others to adopt Digital Performance Management.

03. Optimize the Solution

Consider the following ideas for improving/optimizing DPM to maximize value:

  • Would increased data automation lead to more accurate DPM data regarding impactful reasons for the lost production time?
  • Are there opportunities to reduce operator manual entry/engagement with solutions via increased data collection automation or integration with other systems (e.g., ERP, MES?)
  • Are there opportunities to invest resources in additional DPM extensions, especially those that can be reused by other lines or plants (for example, shift handover reports built in ThingWorx)
  • Are there opportunities to invest in other IoT applications that could add additional value beyond DPM, such as remote monitoring solutions that give a clear picture of machine performance and status
  • Determine areas for continuous improvement, such as monitoring the amount of unaccounted time to see if improvements can be made to the production line to ensure all time is tracked
