Determine Source Control and Testing Plan

Determine how to manage testing as well as deploying Windchill Navigate and document a test plan.

Before you begin, complete this step:

01. Establish source control

No Source control required for out of the box (OOTB) tasks.

02. Document a testing plan

A test plan is needed whether implementing (OOTB) tasks or creating a custom app. The project manager, developers, admin, IT, and key power users who will be involved in user acceptance testing should work together on a test plan. Decide what tests to run based on requirements, app user interface (UI), and technical design document.

In general, the following is recommended:

  • Integration testing: Ensure connections to Windchill and other backend systems, if applicable, are functioning properly.
  • System or functional testing: Ensure the features and functionality meets the desired results for your use case(s).
  • Security testing: Test and review your deployment architecture against your security requirements set by your organization.
  • Stress or load testing: Test the stability of the app and how it handles errors and load.
  • User acceptance testing (UAT): Test with select end users to ensure end user needs are met.
  • Deployment testing: Test that the installation works as expected on a staging server that represents a production configuration.

Document a testing plan including what tests should be completed in each environment. Consider security and compliance requirements at every stage.

Create one master test plan that includes:

  • Summary of what the app does (refer back to your use case)
  • Data sources and data flow
  • Design specification/technical design
  • Acceptance criteria
  • Test procedure
  • Environments and who has access to what
  • Security requirements
  • ThingWorx version or release numbers
  • Results of quality assurance (QA) test
  • Performance figures
  • Revisions
  • Software

You may not have some of this information until testing begins. Some items may not apply when implementing OOTB apps.

03. Write test cases

No test cases required for OOTB tasks.
