PTC is a Leader in PLM for Manufacturers

In “The Forrester Wave™: Product Lifecycle Management for Discrete Manufacturers, Q4 2017”, a new evaluation from Forrester Research, PTC was named a leader in the PLM software market for its Windchill PLM solution.

In the report, it was acknowledged that PTC has been “aggressive in [its] adoption of emerging technologies that touch on their core product development software capabilities and build out on the functionality of their Windchill PLM product”. This is something that we pride ourselves on. With the addition of the IoT platform, ThingWorx, to our product suite, PTC has been leading the next wave in technology: whether it’s IoT, mobile, or augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR).

“IoT is PLM”

If you attended last year’s LiveWorx, you’ll remember CEO Jim Heppelmann declare that “IoT is PLM”. Having a comprehensive PLM system provides a strong foundation to manufacturers looking towards the promise of the IoT era. But in order to fully leverage information gathered from products in the field, you’re going to need to “organize your digital house”. By organizing all data into a digital product definition, you can reduce the time spent finding information from disparate systems, while ensuring that stakeholders are accessing the most up-to-date information. The obvious choice for this digital product definition is, of course, the Bill of Materials (BOM) in your PLM solution. By organizing all product information in a BOM, parts and product information is streamlined into a single easy-to-read list format, while new information is automatically updated for stakeholders throughout the product lifecycle.

PLM on the Go

Another technological change we have embraced is mobile. In the advent of smartphones and tablet computers, it is almost expected that users be able to access all of their information no matter where they are or what device they are using.

Our collaboration apps, ThingWorx Navigate, accomplishes just that. Available on all browsers and responsive to fit your screen, ThingWorx Navigate enables stakeholders to access the data that they need, when they need it.

 AR/VR

Incorporating augmented and virtual reality technology into the product development process is still something that our team is working towards. We believe that leveraging this technology is imperative to the success of any manufacturer in the IoT era. Whether you are looking for a way to streamline design reviews from disparate teams or need to figure out a way to interact with products in the field, AR/VR technology has the potential of advancing your product development process.

**********

In the evaluation, Forrester noted that “PTC is a great choice for discrete manufacturers looking for an involved vendor with IoT capabilities that can get their PLM solution up and running quickly and flexibly”. We couldn’t agree more.
