Modified: 21-Aug-2025

Applies To

  • Windchill PDMLink 6.2 to 13.1
  • Pro/ENGINEER and Creo Elements/Pro Wildfire to Wildfire 5.0
  • PTC Arbortext Editor 5.2 to 7.0
  • Creo Parametric 1.0 to 12.4
  • Creo+
  • PTC Windchill Workgroup Manager
  • SolidWorks
  • Inventor
  • NX
  • AutoCAD
  • CATIA V5

Description

  • Client cache usage and sharing guidelines (Pro/ENGINEER, Creo Elements/Pro 5.0, Creo Parametric and Windchill Workgroup Manager with Windchill Solutions)
  • What is or isn't supported from a client Windchill Workspace cache perspective?
  • What is supported for running multiple simultaneous sessions of Pro/ENGINEER
  • Attempting to connect multiple simultaneous sessions of the CAD tool to the same client cache (eg. %appdata%\PTC\ProENGINEER\Wildfire\.wf  ~/.wf or directory specified by PTC_WF_ROOT environment, additional cache space as specified by the PTC_WF_CACHE environment or Windchill Local Directory PTC_WLD_ROOT) may fail with errors
  • Concurrently accessing the same Workspace in multiple sessions of the CAD tool on the same or different machines, or accessing the same client cache as two or more different Windchill users may fail with errors
  • Windchill Workgroup Manager needs long time to synchronize Workspace after start
  • Actions may fail, return error messages, cause the CAD tool to prematurely exit, cause the CAD tool to become unresponsive, cause Workspace or server display or data inconsistencies due to improper access of client cache under some circumstances
  • Attempting to register a Windchill server, error message:
Local cache for workspace <workspace name> on server <server> cannot be initialized.
or
Fatal error: cache is used by another application
or
Invalid server location. Please change the Location field and try again
  • Attempting to access or browse to the Workspace or server, error message:
Folder cannot be displayed. The contents of this folder are not available.
or
The server cache is registered to <UserName>. Continuing as <UserName> is not recommended.
  • Attempting to delete workspace error message:
You are not allowed to delete the selected workspaces because the Wildfire...
  • Attempting to browse to the server registry causes the CAD tool to exit prematurely
  • The list of objects in the Workspace is empty or inconsistent with the Workspace listing in the initial session
  • Creo Parametric session becomes unresponsive attempting to register or access the same Workspace as another running session
  • Inconsistent behavior occurs because multiple sessions may try to write server and Workspace cache files at the same time
  • Incorrect content may get uploaded and checked into to the server (i.e. A part may have another part, drawing or assembly content file saved over and uploaded to the server
  • Additional servers with the same name appended with [1] are observed in Server Management
  • Does PTC support running multiple versions of Creo Parametric out of the same Windchill Workspace Cache
  • Can the workspace caches be shared between Creo Parametric and the Windchill Workgroup Manager?
  • Workspace cache becomes corrupted when switching between the Windchill Workgroup Manager for AutoCAD and Creo Parametric
  • Workspace is offline after registering multi servers
  • When multi user have registered Windchill with the same local cache location ( PTC_WF_ROOT environment directory), Creo Parametric is not responding or hanging while clicking common space or workspace
