How Southern Water Keeps Customers Safe with the Help of PTC Orbit (Formerly PTC Asset 360)

July 22, 2026
Hear from Andrew Oliver, Head of Operational Technology Platforms at Southern Water, on how PTC Orbit provides greater visibility into operational data and supports the delivery of safe, reliable services for customers and communities.

00:00 We're working on a new smart system that we're calling Smart Water Cycle, which is gathering water from the environment, treating it to make drinking water, gathering the wastewater, treating that, and returning it back to the environment. And across the whole system, we've got technology, and that technology all creates data that, that our systems collect and make sense of. We brought Asset360 in because we increased the number of, of devices that we were managing from around about 8,000 to around about 40,000. That change in the number of devices brought a different scale of monitoring.

00:31 To be able to see what was going on in that estate, we needed better software. In a regulated environment, the consolidated data between the assets and the sensor data helps us provide the business with data they can use to take insights from. Those insights are used to reduce pollutions, to make sure we stay within regulation. The key piece of information that we were missing was the meantime to failure on the devices. Being able to pick out what that meantime to failure was allows us to right-size the crews and be able to spend our budgets more effectively.

01:01 Without that information, we were kinda guessing how many teams we needed. So it's that, in particular, has been really transformative.
