In the rapidly changing world of fashion and retail, brands are increasingly looking for a digital-savvy workforce with skill sets that can support and drive digital transformation strategies.

As such, PTC and the University of Huddersfield have been in partnership for several years with fashion graduates using PTC FlexPLM during their educational studies. Throughout this strategic partnership, PTC has supported the School of Art, Design & Architecture’s BA Fashion and Textiles Buying, and MA International Fashion Design Management courses with a suite of world-class technology solutions, training, and support as part of the University of Huddersfield’s curriculum.

For students this past spring, this partnership went from nice-to-have to absolutely essential as the Covid-19 pandemic spread globally.

Let's take a closer look:

Remote Learning During COVID-19

When the University was forced to close its doors due to the COVID-19 pandemic, students pivoted to continue with their studies at home. To support students, PTC created a cloud instance and provided the FlexPLM solution on the PTC Cloud within just a few days. This enabled students to collaborate remotely and complete their course work, according to Mark Lyness, European Retail Sales Manager at PTC.

Emma White, one of the University’s students of International Fashion Design Management, said the availability of FlexPLM was pivotal to her final project and important as she looks forward to a career. “I aim to further extend my industry and MA experience through the applied use of FlexPLM within my final major project,” she said.

The partnership between PTC and the University of Huddersfield has been crucial for growing the digital transformation footprint at the University, ensuring that the students are up to speed with the latest and greatest technologies as they head out into the workforce.

“The timing of using FlexPLM in the cloud during Covid-19 and the closure of University is extremely pertinent," said Laura Fish, Student, International Fashion Design Management. "I strongly believe that companies can benefit from working within a cloud-based PLM platform when designing and developing products, both now in a period of marketplace disruption and in the future.”

During the Covid-19 pandemic, many of PTC’s existing Retail customers such as Brooks Brothers, C&A, Hanesbrands, Nike, Ralph Lauren, and Vera Bradley have been leveraging PTC’s FlexPLM solution to continue with product development and to enable their employees to work remotely, efficiently and to strengthen data, transparency and communication.

“We’re delighted to support our valued Retail customers during Covid-19 and we’re equally proud to be able to help the future of our industry such as the students at the University of Huddersfield and other educational establishments around the globe with cutting edge technology and services,” said Bill Brewster, Senior Vice President and General Manager of PTC’s Retail Business Unit. “We know access to these tools helps the future of the industry gain the digital skills needed for a successful career in Fashion and Retail.”
