In semiconductor fabrication, chemical etching removes layers from the surface of a wafer during manufacturing. It’s a critical step, and every wafer undergoes many etching steps before it is complete. Without proper temperature control, the etching process could destroy a chip. That’s why South Korean company, FST, produces the Chiller.

FST provides top quality semiconductor products and equipment to leading global semiconductor manufacturers like Tokyo Electron (TEL), Hitachi, Nikko, and Canon. As a best-selling product, the Chiller keeps semiconductors in a temperature-controlled environment as the semiconductor undergoes the intense etching process.

Chillers aren’t just for semiconductors. Industrial chillers cool all sorts of processes, from food and beverage processing to X-ray diffraction. Chillers also cool high-heat specialized items, like MRI machines and lasers.

Recently, FST was at a crossroads with their Chiller. The next generation etching equipment was becoming more efficient with a smaller size, lower power consumption, and a multi-functional machine. To satisfy these conditions, the strategy and design of peripheral equipment, like the Chiller, had to change too.

To quickly tackle complex projects like the Chiller, FST exchanged their 2D process (and software) for a more intuitive 3D design product.

The switch was a good choice. Using Creo and Creo Advanced Assembly Extension (AAX), FST reduced their design time by 46%.

With Creo, engineers work together as one, because anyone can open up a model someone else created and make changes when needed. In the end, FST chose Creo over Autocad and decreased development time by half. For FST, their Chiller just got even cooler.
