While the impact of social media on our culture is still the topic of research, I think we can agree that it has fundamentally changed our daily lives. That is the point of technology after all. But while it’s common to see someone waiting in line looking at their phone instead of talking to fellow patrons, the value of in-person interaction is not completely lost – at least not yet.
Rather ironically, the same industry that made it easier to avoid people is also making it easier to meet like-minded people. According to this Mashable article, “more and more, local tech events and Meetups are popping up around the world, and it’s now common practice for many people within the industry to end the workday by heading out to the ‘Meetup du jour.’"
So whether you’re looking for a new job, an investor, or a mentor, meetups are the new way to network – especially in tech.
It’s no coincidence that cities making their mark as tech hubs all have an active meetup scene. Many of these events are free or include food and drink as part of the ticket cost. Some feature detailed agendas, while others are more relaxed and encourage participants to mingle. With so many topics and types – and more popping up – there is a something for just about anyone. Or you can start your own!
So brush up on your networking skills to make a good first impression, and then check out some of these upcoming meetups. And don’t forget to embrace the social aspect of these events too. Tweet at the event before, during, and after to make additional connections and broaden your network.
