Structural Framework Design in Creo Parametric

Structural metal frameworks or weldments are prevalent in many industries and become the foundation for a wider range of equipment. Defining, designing and documenting these structural frameworks can be burdensome and time consuming without the right tool.

Today I want to discuss a few key features that Creo Parametric has  for structural framework design, weld modeling and creation of engineering drawings, all available in the base license.

Framework Design

Take advantage of an optimized user interface which reflects the structural framework design process. The intelligent component library and automatic creation of downstream deliverables make frame design up to 10 times faster than using standard design techniques.

Create a wide array of structures including: industrial machinery, cranes, assembly lines, conveyor systems, windows, doors, facades, roofs, and more. You have full access to a parts library which includes sections, connections, and joints. You can also choose from a variety of engineering standard steel and aluminum profiles, angles, endplates, screws, and more. Finally, exploring alternative designs is easy with the mouse drag, move and rotate functions, which enable quick and easy modifications.

Weld Modeling
Creo Parametric has extensive weld modeling capabilities. These include: the combine tool, weld preferences, weld annotations, a simplified toggle between lightweight and surface welds, and the ability to modify welds from symbols. You can also extract valuable information from the weld models, such as mass properties, clearances, interferences and manufacturing cost data.

Engineering Drawings

Creo Parametric automatically creates engineering drawings of the individual framework components and the designer can ensure that these are created to international (ASME, ISO, JIS) or company specific standards. The software can also automatically create the bill-of-material (BOM), including stock tables, and associated balloon notes for the complete framework. Finally, given that 3D models of the welds have been already been incorporated,  2D weld documentation is automatically created and can be shown on the engineering drawings.

Creo Advanced Framework Extension (AFX)

While the base product includes full access to the part library and user commands, if you’re working with especially large assemblies and require greater capabilities you can upgrade to Creo AFX.

With Creo AFX, you can add an unlimited amount of profiles, screw connections, or pieces of equipment to your assembly.  It also includes deeper capabilities to support higher levels of productivity on specific framework design aspects, such as stairs and railings.
