Everyone loves their pets, but no one loves the mess. That’s why BISSELL Homecare, Inc., a company that’s been helping people tidy things up since 1876, designed an extensive line of carpet cleaners, vacuums, spot cleaners, and floor cleaners with pet owners in mind. Whether you need to clear away pet hair, tracked in dirt, an accident, or mayhem made by your bored four-legged friend, BISSELL says it has a tool to make clean up easy.
Developing even the most functional products, like cleaning appliances, is an art. And that’s where PTC Creo helps. To create products people want to use in their homes, BISSELL’s designers (who, by the way, get to bring pets to work) need fast, flexible design tools they can use to create alluring products without dragging out the development cycle. To this end, the company has adopted Freestyle Modeling in PTC Creo Parametric and the PTC Creo Interactive Surface Design Extension (ISDX).
When it comes to inventive and aesthetically pleasing designs, freestyle design (standard in all seats of PTC Creo Parametric) gives you the freedom to quickly create freeform shapes and surfaces.
“Using PTC Creo Freestyle enables me to quickly and easily design ergonomic and aesthetic features and integrate them with existing geometry,” says Dan Walker, studio engineer at BISSELL. “The surfacing capabilities are valuable throughout the iteration process and allow users to spend more time innovating.”
The process starts with a basic geometric shape. You manipulate the geometry and change the shape via Freestyle’s control mesh tool. Multilevel subdivisional modeling allows you to control even more of the surface, enabling finer detailing without altering the existing shape. The final output is a high-quality quilt of surfaces, just like any created in PTC Creo Parametric. It’s also easy to go back and change the model to very quickly create multiple concepts and multiple iterations of a design.
PTC Creo ISDX is a freeform surface modeling add-on. It expands your toolset to include freeform modeling along with the technical surfacing capabilities of PTC Creo Parametric. You can build freeform geometry at any point in the design project to rapidly iterate design concepts.
“PTC Creo ISDX is great for creating detailed organic, ergonomic shapes. It allows you to more easily execute challenging designs,” says Walker. You can create better-looking products, without risking errors or sacrificing design control. Plus, the easy-to-learn functions and four-view user interface streamline the process, so you can work faster.
How does a 139-year-old, family-owned business stay on top of what’s happening today? Through fresh ideas and appealing designs. As the top-selling brand in floor care appliances, BISSELL understands that quick and easy creation of aesthetically pleasing products are critical to its success.
