In my daily life, I use the Cloud without even thinking twice; whether it is to upload a file to my Google Drive, listen to the latest song on Spotify, or access my banking account from my phone. At PTC, we’re seeing our customers take advantage of cloud PLM. Seven out of ten of the largest PLM deals last year were in the Cloud.

While the benefits of PLM Cloud are widely understood, the question is evolving from “why” to “how do I get there”.  If you are utilizing a software solution on-premise and you’ve been tapped to develop your cloud strategy, here are three keys to consider when exploring the ‘how’:

  1. I want to move to PLM Cloud… now what? First, it’s important understand the process to get there. According to a recent CIMdata report , the top concerns for PLM users are integration with other enterprise systems, security risks, and performance; having experts by your side and a clear plan of action, timeline and steps ensures your cloud migration is done quickly, securely and cost efficiently. There are a few standard actions in the cloud migration process such as porting your application to the cloud, exporting and migrating your data, and validating the system these must be done properly. Trying to do it alone or move yourself to a hosted option, can put you and your company at risk of security breaches, limited availability, an underperforming software solution, or blowing out your deadlines due to roadblocks. Finding the right partner that offers end-to-end capabilities will allow your organization to not only move to the Cloud effectively but scale for your future business needs.
  2. I know where I want to go, I have a map to get there, how do I optimize? When considering how to optimize the whole experience of moving to the Cloud. The decisions you make in the early stages, i.e. using a Cloud Migration Service, determining your business objectives, do we really need those customizations, etc. will have lasting impacts on your long-term cloud success. It’s important to address your organizational goals for why you’re moving and how you are moving before you take the first step. It helps to utilize cloud experts that have assisted customers just like you- think of them as your GPS to keep you on track.
  3. To SaaS or not to SaaS, that is the final question Before you finally decide to move to the Cloud, the last decision is how you want to license or pay for your solution based on cost, security and your specific business needs. If you are utilizing a current software solution that is customized to your company’s needs, a managed service or hosted option may be your best bet; however, keep in mind that customizations make software upgrades and changes more difficult, and managed services are usually handled with two different fee structures—your subscription license for software and a managed service/hosting fee. If you are utilizing the application out-of-the-box and configuring it to your needs, that simplifies the licensing, pricing and upgrade process and SaaS would be for you.
