State of industrial augmented reality

PTC’s primary research into the state of the industrial augmented reality market made its debut to the public in January 2018, showcasing years of research and analysis combining customer insights with third-party research and analysis.

This bi-annual report series explores the exciting realm of industrial innovation by leveraging PTC’s 30 years of technology expertise, 30,000 global customers, and 1,000 partners to giveState of industrial augmented reality a practical and actionable run-down of the rapidly evolving opportunities in the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and augmented reality (AR) technology markets.

In this mid-year spotlight, we take a look at innovative companies pursuing augmented reality – those who are primarily focusing their initiatives on delivering new capabilities and experiences to customers, rather than on internal use within their operations.

While this group represents less than half of enterprises surveyed by PTC, these companies are moving fast. With a combined 86% of respondents transitioning customer-facing AR pilots to production in the next 12 months, augmented reality innovation is continuing to accelerate and is clearly at the forefront of digital transformation for many industrial enterprises.

Increasing pressure to innovate is being driven by: 1) an increased rate of customer adoption of new technologies, 2) the need for strategic differentiation in increasingly commoditized and hypercompetitive markets, 3) and an insatiable desire to push the boundaries of delivering exceptional customer experiences that we see across all industries. As data from IIoT connected products and business systems plays an increasing role in front-line work, enterprises are quickly recognizing AR’s ability to deliver these insights in-context and reap the value promised by it, ultimately enhancing product value for end-users and unlocking opportunities for closer customer relationships.

The latest mid-year update takes a look behind the curtain into these customer-facing deployments to understand the why, how, and when of the exciting new opportunity presented by augmented reality technology.
