WinWinD: Managing Growth in the Wind Industry

So WinWinD is a recent, fairly new company. It was actually founded in 2000 in Oulu, Finland. So we do actually wind powered turbines. We do a one megawatt product and we do a three megawatt product. The three megawatt product is for the European market and the one megawatt product is for the Asian market.

We actually take care of, pretty much, whatever a customer's needs are in relation to wind turbines. In some cases we deliver just the wind turbine. In some cases we actually take care of developing the whole wind park from pretty much scratch – even roads, all the utilities, and so on.

The wind industry is pretty funny. You don't get so many second chances when you build a wind turbine. You have to put it up in the air, a hundred meters in the air. So you don't get many second chances with the product. It has to be really good when you actually build it, ship it out, and put it in the air. So the idea was that we need to really control, to be able to produce this product and grow at the same time. Those were the main drivers for us. It was the idea that we need to really strongly manage the product, but the necessity for this tool actually came out of growth. We were at that point in time when we were looking at these tools. We were actually also building two new factories, at that point in time. It was very crucial for us to be able to manage the product very well in these two new facilities. They are totally geographically quite far from each other, the product was a bit different, and the product, because of our value chain, is actually very, very, it's undergoing quite a lot of change all the time.

Nowadays, the key initiatives that we're really seeing in relation to PLM is that it's getting a really wide interest within our company and we can really see a lot of different departments are really very keen on getting in on this early stage of creating and building the product and making sure that it's a very good, high quality product. It can also see that there's, among the users, especially the ones who've been in PLM for a while, the demand for more integration, more integration everywhere, bilateral, everywhere. They want to be able to do things faster, more efficient, and they're very keen on getting very high quality out of the software, basically, itself. It should be very intuitive. It should be smart. It should help the users in any case it can.

We had a very good opportunity when we started our project. It was fantastic. We got to start the assessment phase for both PLM and ERP at the same time. We did both assessment phases. We got, really, a very good vision for, or a very good view for the people making the decisions on what tools we should take. We were able to give them a very good view of what the PLM side has to offer and what the ERP side has to offer.

Developing a very good high quality product, getting it right, and growing at the same time.
