PTC's Routed Systems Designer 3.0 Sets New Standard For Streamlining Systems Interconnect Design

NEEDHAM, Mass. – April 23, 2002 - PTC® (Nasdaq: PMTC), the product development company™, today announced the availability of Pro/ENGINEER® Routed Systems Designer (RSD) 3.0, an industrial strength diagramming tool for systems designers and manufacturers around the world. Developed in consultation with major automotive and aerospace companies, Routed Systems Designer can create the complete spectrum of 2D electrical and piping diagrams for systems of any complexity. Building on an easy-to-use purpose-built user interface, Routed Systems Designer is also easily integrated into other applications through a robust and open XML format.

“The creation of winning products requires rapid design iteration and close collaboration between systems designers working in the logical realm of 2D schematics and product engineers working in the physical realm of 3D digital models,” said Brian Shepherd, senior vice president, PTC Technical Marketing. “The PTC duo of RSD for logical design and Pro/ENGINEER for 3D physical design is an unbeatable combination for companies seeking to improve their product development process.”

Unlike general drafting tools, simple flowcharting packages, or add-on modules of CAD systems, RSD is purpose built for the high performance creation of a wide range of diagram types including wiring, process and instrumentation (P&ID), block, functional, and schematic diagrams. It utilizes hierarchies of diagrams to accommodate design reuse and more sophisticated projects. The 3.0 release of Routed Systems Designer delivers powerful new capabilities including:

· An enhanced Automatic Wire Generation Tool further automates the creation of wiring diagrams. Wires are automatically drawn onto a sheet, significantly enhancing productivity.

· A new Java API allows users to extend reporting capabilities to improve collaboration throughout the organization.

· A new Shape Replacement Tool improves productivity by allowing instanced shapes to be either updated from a modified catalog or completely replaced. Instanced shapes may be replaced one at a time, on a single sheet or on a global design basis.

· An enhanced Variable Group Tool improves usability by consolidating all creation and manipulation functionality into one single common tool.

· A new Datatable Explorer to enhance usability by providing a single tool to view, query and manage data tables within a central location.

Openness is a hallmark of RSD. Designed from the very beginning to operate in a heterogeneous environment of applications and databases, RSD communicates connectivity information via a lightweight XML schema with a published format. This facilitates the integration of RSD into an existing environment of legacy applications and 3D CAD systems while reducing design-through-manufacturing errors by eliminating the need to manually transfer connectivity information to coworkers and other applications.

RSD 3.0, available in English, German, and French, runs on Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000; Sun Solaris 2.6, 2.7, 2.8 and HP-UX 11.0 11.0i platforms and is available through PTC's direct and indirect sales channels. A Japanese version is scheduled to be released later this spring.
