Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire 5.0 Compatibility

The release of Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire 5.0 and its compatibility with Windchill 9.1 provides productivity improvements beneficial to the Pro/ENGINEER user working in an integral environment, including embedded browser options on the Windows platform, tabbed browsing, accessible Windchill table views, and support for attributes with units.

Starting with Windchill 9.1 M020, Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire 5.0’s integration introduces the following productivity improvements related to CAD data management:

• Optional Browser Configurations – Allows the Microsoft Windows user to choose the embedded browser to run with Pro/ENGINEER, providing the choice between the following:

  • (Default) Internet Explorer and Pro/ENGINEER running under a single process

  • Internet Explorer and Pro/ENGINEER each running as separate processes

  • Mozilla based browser and Pro/ENGINEER each running as separate processes

  The default option allows users to continue to run the embedded browser in the same configuration as they have done with previous releases of Pro/ENGINEER, whereas the additional two options allow running the browser in a separate process.  Running the browser as a separate process will free up the full application memory limit for Pro/ENGINEER when running 32-bit Windows, which may be advantageous when working with larger assemblies.  In addition, the option to configure Mozilla as the embedded browser has been shown to provide additional performance benefits over Internet Explorer, particularly when working with a larger workspace. Setting this option is controlled by a new config.pro option - windows_browser_type.

• Tabbed Browsing – For any of the browsers configured, the user is now able to take advantage of the tabbed browser user experience in the embedded browser environment.  For example, use one tab for workspaces and another for browsing projects, products, and libraries. 

• Access to Windchill Table Views – Windchill table views display additional attribute information stored along with a user’s CAD data, such as material information or approved manufacturers.  With Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire 5.0, these same table views can be accessed from the File > Open dialog, and are viewable directly from the Pro/ENGINEER dialog.

• Unit Based Attributes - This is the ability to fully leverage Pro/ENGINEER’s parameters with units in conjunction with Windchill’s unit based attribute capabilities.  By allowing the mapping of these attribute types you can convey units of measure for specific attributes between the two systems when a Pro/ENGINEER parameter is designated and the Windchill type definition includes the same attribute assigned a compatible unit of measure.  This means if a parameter in Pro/ENGINEER representing a diameter is also assigned a unit of measure, both the value and the unit of measure are conveyed to Windchill thus providing additional context to the attribute value within the data management system.
