These students designed an innovative step-climbing electric wheelchair, designed to surmount sidewalk step heights of 20 centimeters. This is accomplished through a mechanical system based on a planetary train of five gears that are installed in the front axle, and supported by twin medium-size wheels. The rear axle is supported by two free medium-size wheels. The product is designed to be a lightweight, everyday wheelchair for both indoor and outdoor use. The chair frame is constructed of round aluminum alloy tubing that is welded. Ergonomic studies are being performed to design the seat, armrests and footrest.
Using PTC software gave students the capability to explore more design alternatives that produce better quality designs. The mechanism simulation modules are powerful tools for building complex mechanical devices. As an educational institution, it is very interesting for students to explore these powerful engineering tools to solve real life problems like this wheelchair.
We think the most interesting aspect is that our design provides a pure and simple mechanical solution to surmount single steps without expensive electronic controls to operate the mechanism. This can reduce cost, and make this capability accessible to people without the economic resources for more sophisticated wheelchairs.
