Toyota Center Multi-Sided Centerhung Display

Multi-sided electronic display unit, used in the center of Toyota Center in Houston, TX. The display is suspended above center court, and is used as a marketing tool.
The design of curved displays (located on the lower level of the display) used to take us 80-120 hours to complete. By modeling this parametrically in Pro/ENGINEER, we have reduced the design time to 16-24 hours. This does not take into account the fact that the design we came up with was very conducive to manufacturing (especially welding). The LED cluster rings did not even require welding! They were riveted together using pre-punched holes in all of the sheetmetal parts. Without the use of Pro/SHEETMETAL, we never would have been able to get the holes to line up on the first production run. Saved Assembly Time: Building large center hung scoreboards used to require quite a bit more factory labor before we started using Pro Engineer. Engineering struggled to design all the part so that everything matched right up and aligned. It was necessary to completely assemble the shell of the center-hung display before parts were painted and other assembly was done. This was to assure that all the sections fit together. Holes were match drilled and parts were remanufactured or modified as needed to get the assembly together. Then the parts were labeled and it was torn down so that everything could be painted and assembled. There were a number of problems with having to do all this. Now that we are on Pro/ENGINEER it is not necessary to pre-build the display because we know that everything is going to fit correctly the first time. Since no hand drilling is done, a component can fit equally well in a number of locations on the display. Labor was greatly reduced and manufacturing space was better utilized. Based on the aforementioned reductions it could easily be stated that the overall installation time has been cut in half, and the increase in available manufacturing space allows us to push more product through using the same amount of manufacturing space. Reduced design time: Several years ago a centerhung display that would be comparable in size and complexity was done by Daktronics, Inc. Through data re-use, parametric design and use of the PTC tools that we have available we were able to reduce the amount of project engineering input from 310 hours to 183 hours, or a reduction of 41%. By utilizing Pro/CABLING and RSD, we were able to reduce our cable manufacturing and harness installation time by nearly 50%. Within three months of implementing Pro/CABLING and RSD, we had considerably less rework and increased finished product throughput. During the implementation of Pro/CABLING and RSD, we realized that we needed to change our design documentation process and manufacturing flow. This helped us reach the 50% reduction in manufacturing time. The level of documentation allowed by Pro/Cabling has made training of new employees more streamlined. The software has helped integrate our electrical and mechanical design teams by giving us the opportunity to implement Pro/ENGINEER throughout our design process.
